Every Single Secret
Author: Emily Carpenter
Published May 1, 2018, by Lake Union Publishing
Daphne Amos, extremely reticent, finds comfort in her fiance, Heath. They both keep their pasts hidden from the world, and each other. Heath starts having nightmares that put a strain on their relationship. Instead of giving up Daphne agrees to go on a seven-day retreat with Heath to see Dr. Cerny, a psychologist celebrated for getting to the source of repressed memories. Daphne immediately feels uneasy, especially when the doctor tells them that they cannot have their phones or their keys. They will also be monitored and are not to socialize with other guests. Daphne decides to leave her quarters one night and realizes that this place isn’t at all what it seems. Heath’s past is not meant to be discovered.
The synopsis of this novel hooked me, but when I started it I wasn’t so sure. I had a rough start getting into it, but then it sucked me in. What I love about this psychological thriller is that you can guess how it is going to end, because it has a very realistic ending so to speak. I don’t like when mysteries try to make an inconceivable conclusion that nobody can guess. It drives me wild. An example would be Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough.
It does jump back and forth between different periods in Heath and Daphne’s lives. You learn a little secret about Daphne that you would have never thought. It’s quite interesting how it all plays out. It always helps when thrillers cut to a different time frame or a different perspective. It fills you in on what you might not know or what you haven’t caught throughout the story.
I found that the characters were all well done, and discernible. I didn’t like Heath and Daphne from the beginning, so it didn’t bother me how the book ended. It was overall a well-rounded thriller. It may have been a tad bit long, but that’s okay. I recommend it if you’re looking for a basic psychological thriller!
